The Rules of War

General

First, if you haven't participated in a war before, be sure to read about what an FK war is!

The war will be played in a friendly, courteous manner. The WM has final authority in all decisions on plot, characters, postings, etc. WM decisions may not be appealed to the List Owner and/or List Gardener. The List Owner, List Gardener and/or WM reserve the right to ban a player or faction from the war for disregarding these rules, and to terminate the war after a warning if there seems to be a problem with keeping the friendly atmosphere.

War Archives

Every attempt will be made to archive War 12 to this website on a daily basis. In case the work load grows too heavy, there are two lists that may prove helpful:

  • fkwartalk: http://tv.groups.yahoo.com/group/fkwartalk/
  • fkwararchive: http://tv.groups.yahoo.com/group/fkwararchive/

You do not need to join either group. They have open archives so anyone can see them. The former has everything posted to FORKNI-L with the WAR: heading since July of this year. The latter has everything that has been posted to FKFIC-L with the WAR: heading, starting with War 11.

FKFIC-L Rules

All the regular FKFIC-L rules apply during the war. Only stories may be posted to FKFIC-L. All war discussions belong on FORKNI-L in posts with the WAR: prefix. Coordination is done off list.

Participants

An FK War is not a role-playing game. Participants are not allowed to assume the persona of any FK character or assume supernatural powers. Participants come as themselves, with slight exaggerations allowed. This is how fans get to know one another.

Permission Slips

All participants must have a permission slip on record with their faction leader by October 25, 2004. The required wording for the permission slip is as follows:

"I, <real name/screen name>, <email address>, playing as <internet name you'll be using> hereby express my intention to participate in the Forever Knight War 12 on FKFIC-L, and hereby grant permission to other participants to portray me as a character in their writing."

Participants must provide their real names to their faction leaders, but those can remain confidential and screen names can be used for published permission slips. Email addresses must be included on the published permission slips.

Posting Format

All war story posts must be posted to FKFIC-L and include the WAR: header. Subject lines must follow this format:

WAR: Faction: Story Title

For example:

WAR: Ravenettes: Janette Goes Shopping

The colon after WAR is very important. It's required for the PSU server to recognize the topic and send the post only to people who have signed up to receive war posts. Don't forget it!

Remember that FKFIC-L requires plain text to post correctly. If you don't know how to make your email program create plain text email, find out or get someone else to post your story for you.

Plain text posting tips

Story Headers

Include the date and approximate time your story takes place at the top of the story. If the post follows up on or is set before another post, mention that at the top of the story as well. This is very helpful in archiving the war.

Posting Limits

Posts are limited to 3 per person per day. Remember FKFIC-L's length restrictions: the limit is 300 lines per post, including all headers. If it's longer, split your story into sections.

Note: Administrative and War Maestro posts are exempted from this restriction.

Attacks

General
Attacks on factions or individuals are allowed, and indeed, are encouraged. As Susan Garrett said, "In a war, an attack is the sincerest form of affection."

By filing a permission slip, you've agreed to be attacked, and no further permission is needed. (This applies to attacks only—players must get permission to use individuals for other purposes in a story).

Individuals must be notified in general terms about the time of an attack to ensure there are no conflicts in the time line. A short note to the person stating what time you will be using him/her in an attack is all that is necessary. If a time line conflict arises, the attacked party may require the attacker to change the time, but has no say over content. Attacks work the best when attacker and attackee are cooperating happily in the spirit of mutual mayhem!

Attacks may not be ignored. During the course of the war, each faction may dismiss only one attack as a dream. Any faction or individual who has been attacked more than four times in the war has a right to refuse further attacks for a period agreed upon between that faction's leaders and the WM.

Opening Posts

Opening/call to arms/getting to Toronto posts are limited to one per faction, up to three parts. Individual getting to Toronto stories should be incorporated into faction posts, and should not be posted individually by faction members.

Post-Dated Stories

Because the war is played in real time, dropping post-dated stories (that is, posting a story on Tuesday that is dated as taking place on Thursday) is strongly discouraged. If an attack has been agreed on beforehand but is then post-dated, the attacked party has the right to ask the WM to disallow the attack.

Replying to Requests

Try to reply to email requests to write you in a story or asking for information in as timely a manner as possible.

Borrowing Characters

If you want to use an FK character, permission must be obtained from the leader(s) of the character's primary faction, who are responsible for keeping the character's schedule.

For this war, characters are managed by the following factions/people:

  • Nick—Knighties
  • LaCroix—Cousins
  • Schanke—Nunkies Anonymous
  • Spark—Nunkies Anonymous
  • Natalie—Nick&NatPack
  • Janette—War Maestro
  • Miklos—War Maestro
  • Alma—War Maestro
  • Urs—War Maestro
  • Screed—RatPack
  • Vachon—Vaqueros
  • The Inca—Vaqueros
  • Tracy—Dark Perks
  • Don Constantine—Unnamed Faction
  • Perry—Unnamed Faction

Leaders must grant permission unless the time is already given to someone else. Leaders do not have the right to vet or control content of posts with borrowed characters.

Note: Since Janette, Miklos, Alma, and Urs are in the care of the War Maestro, so by extension is the Raven. Use of these characters and location is open to all factions, depending on availability.

Spying

Joining other faction's lists for spying purposes (for instance, if someone playing with the UF joins the NA under another name in order to scope out their war plans) is not permitted and is grounds for dismissal from the war.

No Permanent Changes

No killing, maiming, or bringing across of players or FK characters is permitted.

Crossover Characters

No crossover characters from other shows are permitted.
