What are the Forever Knight Fan Fiction Awards?

The Forever Knight Fan Fiction Awards are held annually to select and honor some of the best literary works written by fans of Forever Knight and published on email lists and the web.

  How do the awards work?

1. Apply for a voter ID number. This identifies you throughout the nominating and voting process and helps ensure the accuracy of the awards.

2. Decide which stories published via email or the web during 2001 you want to nominate.

3. When you've decided on your favorites, nominate them using the nomination form on this website. You can nominate as many stories, filks, and poems as you wish (but each one only once).

4. Once the nomination period is over, the Awards Administrator tallies the nominations, categorizes them, and determines which are eligible to be on the final ballot. The top five vote-getters in each category appear on the final ballot.

5. The Awards Administrator contacts the authors for their permission to put their works on the ballot and publishes the final ballot.

NOTE: All nominated works must be available on the web for voters to read. If the stories are not archived on the FK FTP site, fkfanfic.com, other public archive, or a personal webpage, it is not eligible for an award.

6. Vote for your choice of best work within each category

7. After voting closes, the Awards Administrator counts the votes and publishes the results.

  What is the awards schedule?

voter registration opens April 1, 2002
nominations open April 5, 2002
nominations close April 30, 2002
final ballot announced May 12, 2002
voting closes June 14, 2002

Who is eligible to nominate stories and vote in the awards?

If you read Forever Knight fan fiction, you are eligible to participate in the awards.

Which works are eligible for the awards?

Any story, poem, or filk that was finished in 2001, and was published on an email list or the web, is eligible. A work that was started in 2000, but was finished in 2001, is eligible. A work that was started in 2001, but finished in 2002, is not eligible.

Do I have to know which division and category the work fits in to nominate it?

No. The Awards Administrator takes care of that. Nominate any work you enjoyed and think is worthy of recognition.

I don't want my story considered for an award. What do I do?

All authors are contacted for permission to use their stories before the final ballot is published. You may withdraw your story at that time.

How can I ensure my story is considered for nomination?

The best way to get your story before the reading public is to have it archived somewhere on the web. In previous years authors have posted to email lists about their eligible stories and where they're located. This year you may send a list to the Awards Administrator at nancykam@attbi.com for listing on the awards website.

What are the divisions and categories?

There are 2 divisions, Adult and Non-Adult, and 8 categories within each division.

  • Adult works are those classified as "adult" by their authors, or posted to an adult fiction list (NNAdult, JADFE, UF, etc.).
  • Non-Adult works are those not specifically classed as Adult. Works that are otherwise Non-Adult, but contain parts posted under an Adult heading, will be classed as desired by their authors.

The categories are as follows:

Vignette up to 1,999 words
Short story 2,000–7,490 words
Novelette 7,500–17,499 words
Novella 17,500–39,999 words
Novel 40,000 and over words
Filk no limit
Poem no limit

Story length is determined by removing all headers from the story and using Microsoft Word 2000 to count the words.

Is the Awards Administrator eligible for an award?

Since the awards are determined objectively (whichever work gets the most reader votes wins), there is no conflict of interest. In other words, yes, you can nominate my stories if you think they're good. If anyone wishes to question the vote tallies after the awards are over, the votes will be available for inspection.
