Ideals Shattered by Marie-Andrée

This missing scene takes place after the credits roll in 'Outside the Lines' and fills in why Tracy and Nick go from being wary of one an other in OTL to being as close as they ever get by the next episode. Serious spoilers for OTL.

A quick thank you to Cheryl who put OTL as the first ep on my Forever Knight sampler tape and got me hooked on a great show, and who then kept on feeding my beast!

Disclaimer: I don't own any of these characters. I'm just playing with them and will return them unharmed albeit a little used.

Ideals Shattered

by: Marie-Andrée

It had been a long night. All Nick wanted was to slowly sip a glassful of blood and then to crawl into bed. Worry for Tracy kept him up, though. She was still so upset over Bruce's implication in J.D.'s murder. How many people had he known in his time who had exhibited such a dual personality? People with a great evil within them hidden by the façade of a saviour.

Lacroix, at the very least. Lacroix. His father, his friend, the one who damned him to an eternity of darkness and who ruined every chance Nick had for regaining his mortality.

No, no, Nick had to concede finally. Lacroix wasn't like Spencer. Lacroix knew of, and had never denied, his nature. Did that make him truly evil? Evil as Bruce Spencer was? Spencer was a cop. He was supposed to save lives, not take them. At the very least, not throw innocent men over the edge of a building without feeling even an inkling of remorse!

Nick was suddenly startled by the buzzer.
"Nick, it's Tracy, can I come down?" his partner asked through the intercom. He let her in.

She looked so tired. Like she had aged twenty years since they'd discovered Cat Purcell's body and she'd been faced with a familiar greeting.

"Button!"

Tracy's whole world was upside down, now. Her ideals shattered.

"Trace? You okay?" Nick asked, feeling thoroughly inadequate as she collapsed on his couch.

Tracy had only time to shake her head before she broke down.
"He was my friend!" she made out between sobs. "I trusted him!" Nick took her into his arms, feeling a wetness seep into his shoulder.

How many had thought the same thing about him in their last, fatal moment before he drained them of their blood? How many had equated him with the likes of Detective Bruce Spencer? Made the decision that all the good he had done was erased by one brutal act of savagery?

It took some time for Tracy to pull herself together. When she did, Nick took his place beside her.
"Tell me about Bruce," he offered gently. "You've known him all your life." Tracy shook her head.
"I thought I knew him, Nick. I knew a good cop, one who got results. I didn't know the man I saw in that holding cell tonight, Nick. That brutal, callous, remorseless murderer!" The tears threatened to come again, but she held them in. "Thanks for listening to me, Nick." Knight smiled.
"What are partners for?"
