My Favourite Characters
My Favourite Characters
Unlike with dueSouth, I actually like the 'mainstreamly
liked' characters of
Forever Knight!
Nick Knight
Let's get one thing out of the way. Nick is gorgeous. That said, let me tell you why I
like this character so much (besides his good looks, of course). It's his inherent duality which
draws me to him, those two polar opposites always trying to claim his soul. And, yes, I do
believe that Nick has a soul. He certainly has faith and he believes in God. I think that Nick is
both the vampire killer and the cop, and that he could never again be one or the other.
We cannot judge Nick by our standards because he isn't like us. This next view might get me in
trouble, but I don't think Nick could be happy being mortal again. He has gotten used to
changing lives when he gets bored. I don't even think that his feelings for Nathalie would be
reason enough for him to be content as a mortal.
That said, let me go on a bit about Last Knight which, I
think, was one of the best series finale I've ever seen. I think a lot can be said about Nick's
character that he cannot love anyone enough to curb his vampire instincts long enough to bring
them over. And it also says a lot that he would rather be with Nathalie in death than to live with
the remorse of having killed her.
Lucien Lacroix
Ah... the enigmatic Lacroix! To judge him by my mere mortal standards, I would find
him evil. It is in human nature to look down upon killing. It is in a vampire's nature to kill.
Lacroix is simply acknowledging his nature, and, I think, being the best vampire he can be, and
that, in mortal terms. Lacroix is a complex being who shows all the nuances found in mortal
beings. We have seen Lacroix love and hate, show fear and fearlessness, anger and empathy.
Yes, I rather like Lacroix, but, no, I would not want to encounter him in real life. 8^)
The most interesting Lacroix episode was definitely Ashes to
Ashes. It opens with Lacroix showing disgust at finding a dead body in his beer fridge
and closes with his showing fatherly regret at who Divia became. Wonderful stuff.
Nathalie Lambert
Nat is definitely one of my favourite characters. Just the fact that she cannot be
hypnotized by Nick speaks volumes about her personality. She isn't afraid of what she doesn't
know.
Forever Knight is not only about Nick's quest to regain
his mortality. It is also about Nat's quest to gain Nick. In superb irony, she joins her immortal
love in death.
Captain Stonetree
Stonetree is my favourite captain. He can be bull headed at times, but he always
remembers where his duty lies. I particularly liked him in 'Dead Issue' where he didn't let his
friendship with a suspect and her family impede an investigation (too much), and where he
admitted that he cried.
Captain Reese
When Reese took over for Cohen, he was still new at his position and this gave him an
air of innocence I rather liked. It was refreshing during the third season to have a character
constantly questioning how humans can do evil things to one another instead of acting like a
desensitized cop.
Don 'Doughnut' Schanke
I don't dislike Schanke, but I don't like him, either. He's just sort of... there. He can
be foul, rude, antagonizing, stubborn, and just so male sometimes. Luckily, sense is
usually knocked back into him before it's too late as he remembers how much he loves his
family.
Janette
Janette is the enigmatic character. A mortal prostitute and a defender of the weak,
Janette is comfortable as a vampire. She knows that being a vampire isn't all that she is. Janette
likes to come off as being very independent, but she was married to Nick for ninety
years! I'm not surprised hat she found a need for companionship again.
The Human Factor was an
excellent episode which reinforces everything that I believe to be true about Janette.
Vachon
It took a while for Vachon to grow on me, but he eventually became very, very dear.
He had such an easy, flippant way of regarding his nature. "If she's an amateur, then I'm a
vegetarian."
Screed
How can a rat eating creep be so cute, cuddly, and endearing at the same time?
